This is the area of fields behind the houses on Appledore Road and Woodchurch Road – called “the Wates site” because Wates the builders have an option (or similar) to buy it for development.
For many years, this has somehow managed to avoid being included in successive local plans for development, despite the merits it seems to have for this.
Recently, the town council’s Planning Committee had recommended that the site should be allocated for housing development – partly in order to reduce pressure to build elsewhere (see Tent1B and Pope House Farm) and partly because of the benefits to the town that could flow from development (football pitches; public open space). However, in the face of vehement local opposition and with assurances from the borough council that (for instance) a delay in building Tent1B would not result in pressure to allow building elsewhere in Tenterden, the town council itself rejected the committee’s recommendations, and the site remains unallocated.
